Preámbulo
ٕLas causas ecologistas y medioambientales están actualmente muy de moda. Desde hace un buen tiempo muchísimos son los grupos y personas que las apoyan, una buena cantidad —posiblemente la mayoría— motivada por real convicción propia, otros cuantos por simple moda, y también prestigio e imagen ante los demás.
La necesidad de proteger el medio ambiente quizás no amerita demasiado esfuerzo de convencimiento. El cambio climático, en una buena medida de origen antropogénico por las emisiones de los gases de efectos invernadero, es un tema central (aunque no único) en esa causa, y ya ha hecho sus estragos en el mundo. De no tomarse las medidas correctivas y paliativas de lugar, las consecuencias que se anticipan para las décadas futuras son aún más graves: sequías, inundaciones, desaparición de zonas costeras, incremento de las tormentas en cantidad y fortaleza, mayor diseminación de enfermedades tropicales, etc.
Pero en lo que respecta a la conservación de las especies, su importancia puede ser menos evidente. ¿Por qué debe realmente el Homo sapiens preocuparse por la preservación de otras especies de animales, plantas y otros seres vivos?

Aportes de las plantas y los animalesTanto las plantas como los animales juegan papeles esenciales en la existencia de los humanos. Esa parte es bastante evidente e indisputable.
Las plantas convierten la luz solar en oxigeno y absorben el dióxido de carbono (CO2), un proceso vital para la vida en la Tierra. Su existencia es también fundamental para el medioambiente. Muchas plantas también son nuestras fuentes de alimentos, y realizan el mismo papel para algunos animales de ganado, e incluso para otras plantas (en forma de fertilizantes). De las plantas también extraemos las materias primas para muchos objetos, maderas, papeles, celulosas, vitaminas, medicinas, cosméticos, resinas, fibras, carbón, etc. Con la creciente demanda por los combustibles biológicos, se agrega otro papel protagónico a las plantas.
De las criaturas del reino animal, usamos un número de especies como fuentes de alimentos, animales de carga y transporte, mascotas, compañeros, guardianes, etc. Algunas pobres criaturas cumplen la labor —muchas veces degradante y penosa— de entretener a los humanos, exhibidas en los circos, como luchadores en las corridas y lidias de toros, combatientes en las peleas de gallos, o como simples víctimas de las crueles cazas deportivas. Otras nos “facilitan” sus lanas, pieles, pelos, grasas, y hasta hormonas, colágenos, enzimas, proteínas y órganos. Muchas sufren miserablemente como las víctimas de nuestros experimentos e investigaciones médicas y psicológicas (que por desgracia en la etapa actual de la ciencia y tecnología aún no tenemos todavía sustitutos viables y confiables para reemplazar esas pruebas con seres vivos). El estudio de la fisiología de algunos animales enriquece nuestras investigaciones sobre posibles curas a enfermedades humanas. Y para que algunas de esas especies existan y podamos aprovecharlas, deben existir otras que les sirvan de alimentos.
Hasta aquí todo es bastante evidente, y ninguna persona sensata lo disputaría. Lo que se torna menos evidente es ¿por qué preocuparnos más allá de la preservación de ciertas especies de plantas y animales (y otras formas de vidas incluyendo hongos y bacterias) con cuya existencia las necesidades humanas se pudieran, en teoría, satisfacer?
III
Extinciones de especies en masa
Para contestar esa pregunta válida es pertinente aclarar primero que las extinciones han ocurrido desde el inicio de la vida en la Tierra. En el estado natural normal se estima que aproximadamente anualmente desaparece una por cada un millón de especies, y otra nueva surge, manteniendo así el equilibrio [1].
Estudios científicos también han determinado que en los últimos 500 millones de años han ocurrido cinco episodios de cataclismos naturales que ocasionaron extinciones en masa, de entre 50 hasta 95 por ciento de las especies [1, 2].
Algunos estiman que estamos actualmente presenciando la sexta extinción en masa, la del período Holoceno. La diferencia con las anteriores es que en la actual la causalidad no es tanto producto de cataclismos naturales, sino de la intervención de una única especie, la nuestra, el Homo sapiens. Las deforestaciones, el cambio climático, las cazas y pescas sin control, la devastación de los hábitats, la contaminación ambiental, etc., todos productos de nuestra especie.
La estimación conservadora del ritmo actual de las extinciones es de 100 veces superior al ritmo en estado natural, pero otros estiman que es entre 1000 y 10000 veces superior [1, 3].

Razones para preocuparnos
Aunque la biodiversidad se ha recuperado en la Tierra tras cada episodio de extinción en masa, la recuperación es extremadamente prolongada: en cada ocasión tardó entre 10 y 100 millones de años [3].
Dada la presencia e intervención ubicua del hombre en todo el planeta, es muy posible que en esta ocasión la biodiversidad no pueda ser recuperada. A menos que también desaparezca el Homo sapiens [4]. En ese sentido el ejemplo de Chernóbil (Chernobyl) es bastante triste y dramático: tras el desastre nuclear del 1986, desaparecieron de la zona contaminada los humanos, pero la vida no se resignó, y en ausencia de los humanos ha vuelto a florecer allí en forma notable un ecosistema, con su flora y fauna [5].
Existe el importante y delicado tema del ecosistema, de la interrelación entre los seres vivos, sus dependencias unas de otras. La desaparición de una especie muchas veces puede trastornar el equilibrio del ecosistema, entre cuyas posibles consecuencias está la desaparición de otras especies.
Preservar el medio ambiente ayuda a preservar el ecosistema (y las especies que lo componen), pero lo mismo es cierto a la inversa. La degradación de uno los dos puede inducir a degradaciones continuas de ambos, por influencias mutuas.
El valor de los “servicios ocultos” que nos ofrecen los ecosistemas del mundo es estimado en unos 50 billones de dólares al año, aproximadamente igual a la suma del producto nacional bruto de todos los países del mundo. Y esa cifra se refiere solo a servicios que ocurren naturalmente, sin incluir los beneficios de las explotaciones que realizamos [6].
Pero supongamos que la desaparición de una especie en particular no trastorne realmente el ecosistema, ¿aún así deberíamos preocuparnos?
La respuesta sigue siendo sí. Y existen razones de diversas índoles para justificarla.
Para los religiosos, está el tema de la creación divina, ¿cómo no proteger y tratar de preservar parte de esa creación? ¿Cómo dejar que parte de esa creación desaparezca por causa de nuestras acciones?
Pero sin llevarnos por motivaciones religiosas, existen otras justificaciones puramente humanas.
Desde el punto de vista moral y filosófico, de la misma manera como, justa y correctamente, protegemos las obras maestras de arte universal, preservándolas para las futuras generaciones, las especies merecen similar protección. ¿Qué pensarán de nosotros las futuras generaciones si por nuestra negligencia e indiferencia desaparecen los osos polares, las ballenas, los anfibios, los tigres, los gorilas, etc.? Ningún cuadro de Giotto, Rafael, Rembrandt, o Picasso podrá sustituir esas desapariciones. Ni tampoco lo harán el Partenón, las pirámides de Giza, las Cariátides, o la Piedad.
En otro ángulo filosófico y moral, está también el tema del valor intrínseco de los seres vivos, muchos de los cuales comparten nuestra capacidad para sentir dolor y temor. Es un campo abordado por algunos filósofos utilitaristas (Peter Singer, entre otros) y recientemente Martha C. Nussbaum ha agregado su enfoque de capacidades al tema. Aunque ha sido aplicado mayormente para defender los derechos de los animales, si se puede atribuir valor intrínseco a seres individuales, defender el derecho de existencia y evitar la desaparición de especies tiene igual sentido.
Si todo lo anterior no es suficiente para convencer, todavía queda el enfoque puramente egoísta: la existencia de la biodiversidad tiene un inmenso potencial de beneficios para la humanidad [1, 2, 3, 4, 7]. Y eso incluye a todos los tipos de seres vivos, animales, plantas, hongos, bacterias, etc.
Se han descubierto bacterias que degradan el petróleo crudo y producen metano [8]. Algunas pudieran ser usadas para auxiliar las labores de saneamiento tras los derrames de petróleo [9]. En Chernóbil (Chernobyl), el lugar de desastre nuclear del 1986, se ha descubierto hongos que usan la radioactividad para producir energía y reproducirse [10]. Y a unos tres kilómetros debajo de la superficie terrestre, algunas bacterias utilizan menas de uranio, en vez de la luz solar, para producir energía [11]. Esos son solo algunos descubrimientos “exóticos” más recientes.
Una gran cantidad de especies aún no han sido estudiadas por los científicos. Muchas otras aún no han sido ni siquiera descubiertas [12].
Toda esa riqueza de especies, de materiales genéticos, aún por estudiar contiene un gran potencial de beneficios para futuros avances en la medicina, fisiología, genética, alimentación, tecnología energética, etc. De perderla ahora el futuro de los humanos, de nuestra especie el Homo sapiens, sería menos brillante. Y ciertamente también menos seguro.

During long dry spells (brought on by higher temperatures) these nasty, stagnant pools become a vital source of water for thirsty birds ... which provide a tasty feast for the resident mosquitoes. At the same time, these dry spells “reduce the populations of dragonflies, lacewings, and frogs that eat the mosquitoes.” [Washington Post]

You’re gonna need an ocean of calamine lotion. Increased CO2 levels cause poison ivy and other weeds to grow “taller, lusher, and more resilient.” [LA Times]

“Brothel owners in Bulgaria are blaming global warming for staff shortages. They claim their best girls are working in ski resorts because a lack of snow has forced tourists to seek other pleasures.” [Metro UK]

More Bear Attacks
Earlier this year, Moscow warned its citizens to beware of brown bear attacks. In Russia, it’s been too hot in the winter for bears to sleep. When bears can’t hibernate, they get very grouchy and become “unusually aggressive.”[Der Spiegel]
Dying Gray Whales
Save the whales! Global warming is thwarting majestic gray whales’ struggle to recover from their endangered status. In recent years, more gray whales have been washing up on beaches after starving to death. Culprit: Rising ocean temps, which are killing off their food supply. An estimated two-thirds of the 110 known species of harlequin frog in Central and South America have vanished since the 1980s due to the outbreak of a deadly frog fungus ... brought on by global warming. Farewell to the Arctic Fox
The White Arctic Fox used to rule the colder climes, but as temperatures warm up, its more aggressive cousin, the Red Fox, is moving North and taking over. [Wired]
Farewell to the Walrus
Walrus pups rest on sea ice while their mothers hunt for food. A new study shows more and more abandoned pups are being stranded on floating islands as ice islands melt. Also, sadly, mother walruses are abandoning them to follow the ice further north. [Mongo Bay]
Farewell to Cute Koala Bears
Australia’s Climate Action Network reports that higher temperatures are killing off eucalyptus trees while higher levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are decreasing the nutritional value of the eucalyptus leaves Koala bears eat. They warn that the cute furry creatures could become extinct in the next few decades. [Science]
Jellyfish Attack
Ouch! At least 30,000 people were stung by jellyfish along the Mediterranean coast last year; some areas boasted more than 10 jellyfish per square foot of water. Thank global warming: Jellyfish generally stay out of the way of swimmers, preferring the warmer, saltier water of the open seas. Hotter temperatures erase the natural temperature barrier between the open sea and the shore. The offshore waters also become more saline, causing the stinging blobs of hurt to move in toward the coastlines (and your unsuspecting legs). [BBC]Giant Squid Attack
Giant squid—an “aggressive predator” that grows up to 7 feet long and can weigh more than 110 lbs—used to only be found in the warm waters along the Pacific equator. Hotter waters mean today they’re invading the waters of California and even Alaska. [ABC]
Homeless Sheep, Goats, and Bears
Bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and grizzly bears are becoming homeless, due to the disappearance of the alpine meadows in Glacier National Park. [AP]
Homeless Deer and Marsh Rabbits
The deer and marsh rabbits in the Florida Keys also face a housing crisis, as water levels rise and warmer temperatures destroy coastal prairies and freshwater marsh habitats. [AP]
Gender-Bended Lizards
Scientists in Australia found warmer temperatures caused baby bearded dragon lizards to change from males to females while still in their eggs, making it harder for them to find mates. Trippy. [ABC AU]
More Stray Kitties
Global warming has extended the cat-breeding season beyond spring, which is the usual time for a kitten boom. The kittens are often homeless and end up in animal shelters. And remember, “The trouble with a kitten is that/ Eventually it becomes a cat.” [NBC-10: Philadelphia] [Ogden Nash]
Suffocating the Lemmings
Lemmings like to burrow under the snow when they hibernate for the winter. Warmer temperatures cause rain to fall during the winter months, where it freezes into a hard sheet of ice above the sleeping lemmings, who can’t crack their way out come spring. [Denver Post]
Goodbye to Cod
Cod in the North Sea are dying out. The warmer waters kill off the plankton the cod eat, making those ones that survive smaller. The warmer waters also mean the poor dears have become “less successful at mating and reproducing.” [MSNBC]
Birds around the World
Recent research found that “up to 72 percent of bird species in northeastern Australia and more than a third in Europe could go extinct due to global warming.” [Monga Bay]
Birds on the Coast
Hundreds of Pacific seabirds —such as common murres, auklets, and tufted puffins —washed ashore last year after starving to death. Scientists blame global warming which led to less plankton, which led to fewer small fish for the birds to eat. [San Francisco Chronicle]
Birds in your Backyard
A report by the National Audubon Society found that birds such as the bobwhite and field sparrow are dying thanks to global warming, as higher temperatures mess with their migration schedules. With vital food stocks peaking earlier and earlier, many migratory birds get to the party too late and can’t find enough to eat. [CNN] [ABC News]
Death to a Snail
The Aldabra banded snail is officially extinct. Existing only on an atoll 426 kilometers northwest of the northern tip of Madagascar, the snail died out after warmer weather cut the rainfall in its habitat. [Monga Bay]
Global Warming Kills the Planet
Greenland’s Melting
Greenland is melting at a rate of 52 cubic miles per year—much faster than once predicted. If Greenland’s entire 2.5 million cubic kilometers of ice were to melt, it would lead to a global sea level rise of 7.2 meters, or more than 23 feet. [LA Times]Less Ice in the Arctic

So much of the ice cover in the Arctic disappeared this summer that ships were able to take recreational trips through the Arctic Sea, and scientists say so much of the ice cover will disappear in upcoming years that the passage could be open to commercial shipping by 2020. The Oceans are Turning to Acid
It sounds like a really bad sci-fi movie, but it’s true: The oceans are turning to acid! Oceans absorb CO2 which, when mixed with seawater, turns to a weak carbonic acid. Calcium from eroded rocks creates a “natural buffer” against the acid, and most marine life is “finely tuned” to the current balance. As we produce more and more CO2, we throw the whole balance out of whack and the oceans turn to acid. [CS Monitor]

Death in the Time of Cholera
Cholera, which thrives in warmer water, appeared in the newly warmed waters of South America in 1991 for the first time in the 20th century. “It swept from Peru across the continent and into Mexico, killing more than 10,000 people.” [Washington Post]

Cold weather no longer kills ticks that carry Lyme Disease. Ticks recently began spreading along the coastlines of Scandinavia, which formerly was too cold for them to survive. Cases of Lyme Disease in the area have doubled since the late 1990s. [MSNBC]

La lucha contra el Cambio Climático: (I) El Momentum

Inicia en Bali, Indonesia, la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático para negociar el acuerdo que sustituirá al Protocolo de Kioto sobre el Cambio Climático.
Negociado en diciembre del 1997 en Japón, el Protocolo de Kioto estipula una reducción de un 5% en el nivel de la emisión de los gases de efecto invernadero con respecto a 1990 para los países desarrollados. Su vigencia empezó el 16 de febrero de 2005 y expirará en el 2012.

En el marco de la Conferencia de Bali Australia finalmente anunció su ratificación del Protocolo de Kioto. Los EUA queda como la única nación desarrollada que no lo ha ratificado.

Más de 200 científicos prominentes de diversas nacionalidades y afiliaciones, bajo el auspicio del Centro de Investigación de Cambio Climático de la Universidad de Nueva Gales del Sur en Sydney, Australia, firmaron un documento, la Declaración Climática Bali 2007, instando a los negociadores de la Conferencia de Bali a alcanzar un acuerdo, a más tardar para el 2009, cuyo objetivo debe ser mantener el aumento de la temperatura global a no más de 2ºC de la temperatura preindustrial (antes de 1750).
Para alcanzar dicho objetivo se debe lograr una reducción del nivel de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero para el año 2050 que llegue a la mitad o menos del nivel de 1990. Las emisiones globales deben alcanzar su máximo nivel y empezar su disminución dentro de los próximos 10 a 15 años.
El objetivo y las medidas necesarias enunciados en la declaración concuerdan con el informe de la IPCC.

Tras tortuosos esfuerzos, concesiones, y un día más de lo programado, se pudo finalmente llegar a un acuerdo compromiso en la Conferencia de Bali en el cual se acuerda una hoja de ruta o plan de acción que compromete a las naciones a negociar y completar para el 2009 el acuerdo que habrá de entrar en vigencia en el 2013 para sustituir al Protocolo de Kioto.
Aunque no se detalla en el texto principal los objetivos específicos que deben alcanzar en la disminución de la emisión, ni el tiempo límite para lograrlos, sí menciona la urgencia del tema, y mediante una nota hace referencia al informe Resumen Técnico de la IPCC donde están esas informaciones.

El momentum para la lucha global contra el cambio climático, que empezó con el anuncio del Premio Nobel de la Paz de 2007, desafortunadamente no culminó en el éxito que se esperaba. Aunque la Conferencia de Bali no culminó en un fracaso rotundo, tampoco se llegó al objetivo inicial de concretizar los términos para el acuerdo sucesor del Protocolo de Kioto. Esperemos que la sensatez prevalezca y se cumpla la meta trazada para el 2009.

Releyendo ahora el último párrafo percibo su tono negativo, cuando realmente pude haber elegido visualizar el desenlace con un efoque positivo y optimista: sí se logró un plan de acción, acordado por todas las naciones, con el compromiso de concretizar el acuerdo para el 2009. Y con la ayuda del optimismo (y fe en los humanos), ¿por qué dudar de que dicho compromiso será respetado y el acuerdo llegará felizmente?
